While rue Sainte-Anne in the Opéra district is known for its numerous Japanese restaurants, the Saint-Germain-des-Prés district is seeing the formation of second “Little Tokyo” of the capital for several years.
In this district of the left bank, where artists, musicians and intellectuals have rubbed shoulders for more than a century, Japanese culture is now intruding.
There you will find Japanese specialties such as ramen , Soba (buckwheat noodles), sushi authentic, kushi-aged (fried skewers), onigiri (rice balls), sando (Japanese sandwich) and, for the sweet part, dorayaki and mochi (traditional Japanese pastries). As for drinks, green tea and sake are also of honor.
Based in Saint-Germain-des-Prés since 2008, Maki Maruyama , director of the family home of the Japanese tea house Jugetsudo , took the initiative to promote this new Japanese gourmet village by creating the “Sakura Passeport”.
Sakura Passport
Since 2021, the Sakura Passeport is distributed in spring until mid-July in around fifteen Japanese establishments in Saint-Germain-des-Prés. This is a small booklet presenting the essential addresses in the neighborhood. To obtain this booklet, simply make a purchase at one of the partner addresses between April 25 and July 6, 2024. With each purchase, your passport will be stamped. The seventh stamp is a pass to participate in the competition to win a round trip plane ticket to Japan! Only one person will benefit from this generous reward but many other prizes are up for grabs. The second prize allows two people to participate in a mochi workshop at the Tomo pastry shop, the third prize is a green tea workshop at the Jugetsudo boutique.
New for the 2024 edition! We welcomed the Paris Cinéma Club as a partner establishment. The 4th prize of the competition will be offered by PARIS CINEMA CLUB, a cinema card worth €60 each for 2 people. In addition, Japan will be in the spotlight in the theaters of the Paris Cinéma Club (Christine Cinéma Club and Écoles Cinéma Club) with a different Japanese film to be discovered every week from April 17 to July 30.
Each establishment can only put one stamp on a Sakura Passeport, except four restaurants which can exceptionally issue two stamps. Once the seven stamps have been collected, the Sakura Passeport must be dropped off at the Jugetsudo boutique (95 rue de Seine, 75006 Paris) on Saturday July 20 at the latest. Please note, like a real passport, each participant can only hold one Sakura Passport!
Other new features for 2024 “Chereries on the cake”:
A Guided Tour by Hiromi Kobayashi, on June 8, 2024 at 2 p.m. or 5 p.m. (Guide lasting 1h30) will be offered for the first 20 people who have collected 10 stamps before June 1st.
After 14 stamps, an additional chance in the grand draw box will be offered. The draw for the competition will be organized at the end of July and the result will then be published on the Sakura Passeport Instagram account.
